The Center’s Executive Director, Michelle Deutchman, responds to a series of questions posed by student journalists from New University, the official campus publication of the University of California, Irvine. In her video-interview, Deutchman describes some of the foundations of campus expression policy and provides suggestions for maintaining an inclusive and welcoming campus community. The interview is now included on the UCI Office of Inclusive Excellence website as a free speech FAQ. You can also see Michelle’s responses to each of the questions below:

Question 1: Where should schools draw the line on hate speech and “diversity of ideas?” How hateful does someone have to be for it to be unacceptable?

Question 2: Is free speech on campus really under threat? Aren’t we open to hearing more voices now than ever before?

Question 3: How can universities respond to constitutionally-protected speech that is offensive and hurtful to members of its community?

Question 4: How does the Free Speech Center plan to better educate UC students about their freedom of speech on campus?
