Executive Director Michelle Deutchman and 2019-2020 Fellow Lara Schwartz participated in a panel on Academic Freedom, Free Expression, and Civil Discourse at the Scholars at Risk 2020 Global Congress. In the discussion, Deutchman highlighted the responsibilities that come with free speech and the need to reframe the First Amendment conversation on campus around what we should say rather than what we can say. Schwartz talked about her work as Director of the American University Project on Civil Discourse and emphasized the importance of encouraging political debate through intentional, respectful dialogue.
